Logic questions in grade 4
At 9–11, children move into abstract thinking: finding the unknown number, ordering with several conditions and discovering rules. Logic questions support this step through play and prepare them for skills-based test questions.
Question types
- Find the unknown: "6 more than 4 times a number is 50" — working backwards
- Number sequences: square numbers, "one more than double" rules
- Conditional ordering: who lives on which floor? — Order Workshop
- Sum and difference: 28 students, 4 more girls than boys
- Worst case: sock and pencil questions
- Kakuro and magic squares: digit combinations — 6×6 Number Sudoku
4-step solving strategy
- Sort the information: Write down what's given and what's asked separately.
- Choose a strategy: A table, a drawing, guess and check, or working backwards.
- Solve step by step: Write down every intermediate result.
- Check: Put your answer back into the question and check it meets every condition.
Example: working backwards
"6 more than 4 times a number is 50." Start from the end: undo the 6, then divide by 4. Talk this through with your child; answer keys for the free PDF questions aren't published.
